Our Load Testing and Repair Process

HESWA’s in-house process is designed to be thorough, efficient and convenient for our customers. Here is how it works:

Convenient Gear Submission

Simply send your equipment to our Welshpool facility. Our team can assist with coordinating pickup and delivery where required. For clients across Western Australia, we can also arrange transport to make the process as straightforward as possible.

Receiving and Assessment

Upon arrival, each item is logged into our system and assessed to determine the scope of testing and any repairs required. Our technicians will contact you with findings and a quote before proceeding with any work.

Visual Inspection

Our qualified inspectors carry out a detailed visual examination, checking for wear, corrosion, cracks, deformation and any other defects that could compromise safety or performance.

Repairs

If defects are identified, our technicians carry out repairs using quality spare parts and replacement components. All repairs are completed in accordance with the relevant Australian Standards and manufacturer specifications. Where required, we work directly with original equipment suppliers to source the right parts for the job.

Proof Load Testing

Once repairs are complete (or if no repairs are needed), equipment undergoes proof load testing. Our facility uses advanced testing technology to assess the performance and load-bearing capacity of each item, applying controlled loads above the working load limit to verify structural integrity.

Non Destructive Testing

For critical components, HESWA offers non destructive testing (NDT) methods including magnetic particle testing, ultrasonic testing and eddy current testing. NDT is conducted after proof load testing as required by AS 4991 to detect subsurface flaws that visual inspection alone cannot identify.

Tagging and Certification

Equipment that passes all testing receives colour-coded inspection tags based on the relevant inspection period and certificates of compliance. Load test certificates are issued upon completion.

Register and Documentation

All results are uploaded to HESWA’s free online lifting and rigging register. You receive personalised login access to view and download your load test certificates, inspection certificates and complete equipment register at any time. We also send timely reminders before your next inspections and recertifications are due.

Return to Service

Tested and certified equipment is returned to you ready for immediate use, with delivery arranged as needed. If any items cannot be economically repaired, our team provides expert advice and a quote for replacement equipment from our extensive range of products.

What Is Proof Load Testing?

Proof load testing is a controlled process that applies a load above the equipment’s rated working load limit to verify its structural integrity and safe operation. It is a critical step in confirming that lifting equipment is fit for service, particularly after manufacture, repair, modification or extended periods of use.

Under AS 4991, proof load testing requires that each device withstand the applied load for a minimum of one minute. The equipment must show no permanent set deflection greater than 0.25% to pass. After proof testing, sufficient non destructive examination and testing must be carried out to check for signs of flaws or defects.

HESWA’s testing facility uses advanced equipment to deliver accurate, repeatable results that meet AS 4991 requirements across a broad range of lifting applications.

When Is Proof Load Testing Required?

  • New lifting equipment before being placed into service
  • Equipment that has been repaired, modified or altered
  • Equipment that has been overloaded or involved in an incident
  • Periodic recertification as required by the relevant Australian Standards
  • When requested by a client, site operator or regulatory body

Australian Standards We Comply With

Every repair, test and recertification HESWA performs is carried out in strict accordance with the relevant Australian Standards. Our technicians maintain ongoing training to stay current with regulatory changes. The key standards governing our lifting services and testing include:

AS 4991
Lifting Devices

Covers the design, testing, marking and inspection requirements for lifting devices connected to a crane, hoist or winch.

AS 3775
Chain Slings

AS 1418
Cranes, Hoists and Winches

Covers general inspection and maintenance requirements.

AS 2550
Cranes, Hoists and Winches (Safe Use)

Outlines operational checks and pre-use inspection procedures.

AS/NZS 1891
Industrial Fall-Arrest Systems and Devices

Governs the testing of harnesses, lanyards and related height safety equipment.

AS 4497
Round Slings

Addresses the inspection and defect identification of synthetic fibre round slings.
